GNU/Linux CD of the Month

February 2003

All executable programs are for Intel x86 Linux distributions unless stated otherwise.

Size: 530,700,288 bytes

DOSEMU - v1.0.2.1 (stable) and v1.1.4 (development). Free GNU General Public License (GPL) source code and executable. DOSEMU stands for DOS Emulation, and is a Linux application that enables the Linux OS to run many DOS programs - including some DPMI apps. DOSEMU requires DOS operating system software (DOSEMU subset of FreeDOS included).

FreeDOS - Beta 8 and New Creations 1 distributions. Free GNU General Public License (GPL) source code and executables by the FreeDOS Community. FreeDOS aims to be a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS(r) compatible operating system. FreeDOS is ideal for anyone who wants to bundle a version of DOS without having to pay a royalty for use of DOS. FreeDOS will also work on old hardware, in DOS emulators, and in embedded systems. FreeDOS is also an invaluable resource for people who would like to develop their own operating system. While there are many free operating systems out there, no other free DOS-compatible operating system exists. Included are bootable installation floppy (.zip) and CD (.iso) images. Once burned to CD, the FreeDOS CD image can also be used to boot and run FreeDOS without installation to the hard drive. Also included is the SEAL 2.0 graphic desktop environment.

FrozenBubble - v1.0.0. Free GNU General Public License (GPL) source code and packages for Debian Linux 3.0, Mandrake Linux 9.x, Red Hat Linux 8.0 and SuSE Linux 8.1 by Guillaume Cottenceau, Alexis Younes, Amaury Amblard-Ladurantie, and Matthias Le Bidan. Frozen Bubble won Best Free Game, Best Free Arcade Game, and Best Sound/Music honors in the 2002 Happypenguin Awards. Throw colorful bubbles to build groups and destroy the groups. The aim of the one player game is to destroy all bubbles. The aim of the two player game is to outlive your opponent. Full-featured, colorful animated penguin eye candy, one hundred levels in the one player game, three professional quality 20-channel music tracks, fifteen stereo sound effects, and seven unique graphical transition effects. Requires Perl and SDL.

Photoshrink - v3.0.2. Free GNU General Public License (GPL) Python code by Leif Johnson. Photoshrink is a Python script originally intended to create thumbnail gallery Web pages for directories full of large images. It now creates two flavors of thumbnail images and writes supporting Web pages: a slide show layout for medium thumbs and a thumbnail gallery layout for small thumbs. The code has been reorganized and now includes both cleaner library code and a cleaner front end (command line) tool. The required Python Image Library (v1.1.3) is included.

Wine - v20030219. Free GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) source code and packages for Debian Linux 2.2, Red Hat Linux 8.0, and SuSE Linux 8.1. Wine is a program that allows the operation of DOS and Microsoft(r) Windows(r) programs (Windows 3.x and Win32 executables) on UNIX. It consists of a program loader, which loads and executes a Windows binary, and a library that implements Windows API calls using their UNIX or X11 equivalents. The library may also be used for porting Win32 code into native UNIX executables, often without many changes in the source. Wine requires an x386 or better processor, X Window System, 250 MB of free hard disk space to compile from source (50 MB for executables). An accelerated video card is recommended.
